The increasingly pressing needs for effective means of analyzing and controlling water resources problems make it imperative to use to the fullest advantage the capabilities of computing machines. Determination of the optimal interface between man and computer in water resources is a many‐faceted and largely unexplored problem involving a variety of goals and possible approaches. This paper describes one possible aspect of the interface, the design of a problem‐oriented computer language, that is, a language with commands and data format specifically geared to the field of water resources.
