1. Introduction -4 set of parameters Θ is said to be identifiable if it is uniquely determined by the joint distribution of the observed variables. Such a distribution will be called a pheno-distribution in order to distinguish if from distributions of unobservable (latent) variables nhich may possibly occur in the model. (The prefix pheno- is chosen from consicleration of the term phenofjjpe in genetics.) Tno values of Θ will be said to be pheno-equivalent if they belong to structures generating the same pheno-distribution. A specification S is said to be pheno-restricting relative to a model M if the set of pheno-distributions compatible with M and S is a proper subset of the set of pheno-distributions compatible with M.
