Automatic target recognition fuzzy system for thermal infrared images

An expert system for automatic recognition of armored vehicles from infrared images taken at short distances is presented. The problem is divided in two subproblems: the computation of the orientation and position of the vehicle based on a crude model of the vehicle, and is the identification of the vehicle in a reference position and orientation. This expert system uses fuzzy logic to combine information coming from different heuristics and to guide the search of the solution to the recognition problem. The results obtained for a database containing infrared images of eight vehicles in sixteen different positions are shown.>
