Storage systems for video service

Ann Chervenak · 2002

We evaluate the performance of storage system alternatives for video servers. We show that disk systems support many simultaneous video accesses. Striped disk systems perform particularly well, with better load balancing, higher disk utilization and lower cost per stream than non-striped systems. We show that the performance of storage hierarchies that include magnetic disk and either magnetic tape or optical disk is disappointing. In both cases, the small number of drives in a typical library offers too little bandwidth to support more than a few simultaneous video streams. Because of contention for drives, response times are long. Average cost per video stream is two orders of magnitude higher than for magnetic disk systems.
