The study of multi agent systems (MAS) began in the field of distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) about 20 years ago. As the number of deployed MAS applications increases, further and better experience with the technology is gained, enabling a strong evaluation of the field from a more practical perspective. Today, MAS is not simply a research topic, but also beginning to become an important subject of academic teaching, industrial and commercial application. This paper presents some of the key issues in MAS research, approaches for developing MAS, and the challenges that remain.
