Mixed-Initiative Dialogue Systems for Collaborative Problem-Solving

George Ferguson, James F. Allen · 2005

This paper describes our motivation and approach to the design and implementation of mixed-initiative dialogue systems for collaborative problem solving. Our model allows true mixed-initiative dialogue, where goals (and other joint commitments) can come from either the user or the system. The system’s behavior with respect to its commitments is driven by a formal model of collaboration based on a theory of joint inten-tion which but also allows the system to interpret the utterances and actions of the user in a uniform manner.
