Simulation-Based Analysis of Impact of Random Loss
Kumar Manoj, Sanjeev Sharma · 2008
TCP is the widely used transport protocol and is responsible for the transmission of around 90% of the Internet traffic. Algorithms like Slow Start, Congestion Avoidance, Fast Retransmit and Fast Recovery are the basis for different TCP versions. Tahoe and Reno are the TCP versions that use these algorithms. In this paper, we have compared the effect of random loss on TCP performances with different TCP variants (Tahoe and Reno) by running simulation for 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% of data packet loss due to noise in the transmission link. Several simulations have been run with ns-2 simulator in order to acquire a better understanding of these TCP variants and the way they perform their function. The simulation results shows, that Tahoe works best under a wireless scenario. We conclude with a discussion of whether these TCP versions can be used in Mobile Ad hoc Networks or not?
