Developing safe software for critical airborne applications

Research and development work over the past few years has yielded several prom- ising approaches to integrating the tradi- tional hardware design and analysis tech- niques into the software development pro- cess s o that the s afety and reliability of complex software driven processes could be assured. This paper a ddresses a number of these areas, with emphasis on those t ech- niques which can be used to ensure the safety of software driven embedded sys- tems. This paper is concerned with design and analysis techniques, and does not address the area of control law validation or statical simulation methods which can be used to evaluate the fault-free perfor- mance of a control system.
