Heuristics in the Fight against Computer Viruses

Carey Nachenberg · Information Systems Security · 1998

The Greeks Initially coined the word heuristic; its original form was heuriskein, which meant to discover. Today, the term is used almost exclusively in computer science to describe algorithms that are effective at solving complex problems quickly but yield less than optimal solutions because of the accompanying speed Improvement. To Illustrate this concept, the traveling salesman problem Is a classic enigma in computer science for which computer scientists have devised many heuristic solutions.
