Small Codebook Interpolative Vector Quantization System

In a VQ system, the complexity of the encoders is often depended on the size of the codebook used. If the size of the codebook is too large, the computation load would be too high and hence difficult to implement. In view of this, Interpolative Vector Quantization (WQ) had been suggested to reduce the codebook size of the systems. In essence, an approximated image is first generated, and then subtracted by the original picture to give a residual image. The latter is then encoded with conventional VQ. In this approach, the size of the codebook can be reduced without degradation in the visual quality of the decoded images.
