An architecture framework for distributed operations applications

Nagarajan Natarajan, Elizabeth C. Anderson, Eric D. Evans, Jennifer Parks · 2003

An architectural framework for the specification and deployment of distributed operations applications for telecommunication networks is described. It is based on a multilayer model for network operations that decomposes resource-related functions into a network management layer, element management layer, and an element layer. Functions that can be placed in the element management layer are identified. Several principles that are to be adhered to in the deployment of operations applications to facilitate distribution and interoperability are described. In this framework, applications are deployed in software units called building blocks, each of which is independently installed and administered. Building blocks interact via interfaces called contracts. A contract is an open interface that is specified using standard communication models and notations. The infrastructure, called the distributed processing environment, provides services that enable building blocks to interact via contracts.>
