An introduction to signed and encrypted e-mail using a webmail interface
John F. Čigas · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2012
This workshop introduces participants to tools and processes for teaching about signing and encrypting email. This approach uses Gmail, Firefox (with additional plugins), and free personal email certificates from Comodo. This benefits students by using a familiar web-based email environment and also by addressing the cryptographical aspects incrementally, rather than in an all-at-once, all-or-nothing fashion. Participants will start with a plain Gmail account and slowly add tools to read signed email, send encrypted email, receive encrypted email, and finally send signed and encrypted email. Along the way, we'll look at the digital certificates being used at each stage.
