A model-oriented programming support environment for software engineering courses

A Model-Oriented Programming Support Environment (MPSE) is a purpose-built system designed specifically to support the teaching of fundamental and general concepts that underpin the object-oriented paradigm. An MPSE embodies a model of the software development process via the notion of objects whose state constrains the application of operations. The integrated facilities provided by an MPSE enable users, whose level of skill may change significantly over time, to develop various kinds of description be directly manipulating objects and also by changing the values of attributes of objects using a combination of text and structure editors. The MPSE described in this paper provides support for automatically generating representations of simple object attributes, and also support for compiling and executing descriptions of programs and larger-scale software systems.
