Performance evaluation of dynamic TDM A schemes for voice packet transmission over radio networks

Dimitris Mitrakos · International Journal of Electronics · 1994

A new dynamic TDMA scheme is introduced for voice packet transmission over radio networks. A special signalling mechanism is developed in a manner that allows a network of geographically distributed voice terminals to operate jointly as a virtually centralized statistical multiplexer, thus maximizing their statistical gain in terms of bandwidth consumption. Additionally, based on dynamic programming, optimal rate control functions are obtained for speech coding in a manner that enhances the system's capability of efficiently handling changing patterns of communication traffic. As a result, the conventional call blocking or loss character of a system with limited communication resources is replaced by system behaviour that deteriorates gracefully with increasing traffic load. The paper concludes with computer simulation results that provide further insight into the operating properties of the proposed TDMA schemes.
