Optimal test designs for polytomously scored items

Martijn P. F. Berger, Eric Mathijssen · British Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology · 1997

As achievement testing gained currency in educational and psychological measurement, and item response theory (IRT) models were used more frequently to analyse such test data, the need for more efficient test designs became urgent. The results from the statistical theory on optimal design can be applied to the assembly of achievement tests by means of IRT models. Up till now, efficient test designs were considered only in relation to IRT models for dichotomous responses. In this paper the optimal assembly of tests will be considered for polytomously scored responses.
