CROSSBOARD: Crossmodal Access of Dense Public Displays

Crossmodal displays aim to bridge the gap between ambient display technology and personal mobile human computer interaction through the exploitation of aspects of crossmodal cognition. We extend the notion of sequential temporal multiplexing, introduced for crossmodal ambient displays, and describe a hierarchical temporal multiplexing approach. We demonstrate this through CROSSBOARD, a prototype public display application that harnesses hierarchical crossmodal cues to support efficient multi-user interaction with dense public information displays. Results of a pilot user study are presented in which the potential of CROSSBOARD for improving the retrieval of unindexed information from dense information displays is clearly demonstrated. © 2007 University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
