MOBILE DBA TRAINER - 24/7/365 Availability Training for Future Database Administrators
Dominic Becking, Günter Schlageter · 2005
Abstract:. Our workgroup is experimenting with and evaluating different forms of teaching and learning. A new form of teaching is the virtual practical training/lab course on database systems. We developed a virtual practical training on the subject of database administration, which makes further demands on system architecture and didactics. To increase authenticity (and simulate 24/7/36 availability demands) one part of the lab course deals with mobile DBA access to the database. In disaster scenarios the students are obliged to analyze system failures and recover a database instance via a MDA/PDA. This paper presents the MOBILE DBA TRAINER – a system with which our students gain mobile access to a sheltered and didactically reduced lab surrounding which nevertheless allows for all necessary DBA Tasks to be performed. Introduction: Virtual Lab Courses on Database Administration In this first chapter we introduce our concept of virtual lab courses on database administration. We covered this subject in greater depth in (Becking, Berkel, Schlageter 2004). We will however present a short introduction which covers the basic thoughts and concepts necessary for the understanding of the further development we will describe later on. To fully understand our students ' prerequisites one has to know that the University of Hagen is for distance
