Morphological Image Processing With Application To Medical Imaging

Tun‐Wen Pai, John H. L. Hansen · 2005

This paper presents results from an investigation on morphological operators in the area of medical imaging. Two problems are considered; i) removal of salt and pepper noise from degraded chest images, and ii) edge detection of a chest image. The basis of the processing is centered around recent advances in operator theory employing mathematical morphology. Performance of morphological operators on medical images are presented and discussed. It is shown that morphological operators can significantly reduce spike noise, and offer greater flexibility than median filtering. Morphological based edge detection is also shown to outperform traditional gradient based techniques. The results illustrate the power of morphological operators for medical image processing in terms of noise reduction, reduced data storage and transmission requirements.
