The MARISAT system has since its inception in 1976 provided reliable service to ships at sea and off-shore platforms. With the completion of the Japanese shore station, the MARISAT coverage is worldwide. This paper describes the system configuration and typical features of the MARISAT Shore Station constructed in Yamaguchi, Japan in 1978. The features, that represent an improvement over the state-of-the-art , are: a) Reduction of L-band sidelobes by the use of a f requency selective subreflector, b) Improvement of tracking accuracy by a factor of 2 over conventional step-tracking systems, C) Prevention of loss of acquisition in the earth to satellite AFC loop, even for short switching periods, and d) Highly reliable software and hardware operation of the Network Control P rocessor (NCP) for call processing, statistic data recording, etc..
