PPM symbol synchronization in random data

The problem of achieving PPM (pulse position modulation) symbol synchronization using no reference marker but a finite span of slot observations is considered. The optimum maximum-likelihood (ML) decision statistics and the suboptimum, easily implementable maximum correlation decision statistics are derived for PPM symbol synchronization for the Poisson and Gaussian channels. Simulation results presented show that the PPM symbol synchronization probability performances of both decision statistics are practically identical for moderately high signal-to-noise ratios.>
