As a computer system continues to operate, it is almost inevitable that the demands for service increase, both in number and in amount amount of service per demand. At some point, the service level degrades to an unacceptable level, and some action must be taken: either reduce the demands or improve the system. It is the hope of system managers that these episodes of increasing demand, unacceptable service and implementation of a remedy could be anticipated, so that an orderly plan of operation could be initiated.
