Angle of arrival estimation without EVD for coherent sources

Amjad Salameh, Jonathan Bagby · 2008

A novel method is introduced in this paper that estimates direction of arrival (DOA) utilizing coherent and noncoherent signals that are impinging on an array of antenna elements in multipath environment. This algorithm presents several advantages over the classical subspace algorithms such as root MUSIC and ESPRIT with forward/backward spatial smoothing. The major advantages are that the proposed method does not require the forward/backward spatial smoothing to detect coherent sources whereas it is required for Root MUSIC and ESPRIT methods. The proposed algorithm does not require Eigen decomposition unlike spatially smoothed covariance matrix in Root MUSIC and ESPRIT methods. These advantages reduce the computational complexity while maintaining the accurate estimation. Simulation results show better performance for the proposed method when compared with forward/backward spatial smoothing Root MUSIC for one-dimensional DOA estimation.
