The discrete cosine transform (DCT) has been successfully applied to speech and image data compression. With the demands of high speed and high reliability, it becomes important for engineers to design the implementation network with a fault tolerant capability. In this paper, we first present a fault detecting architecture for DCT implementation based on properties on the fast DCT algorithm and on the technique of recomputing by an alternate path. It is shown that the scheme presented has favourable fault coverage and lower hardware overheads.
