Currently there are no formal certification schemes for biometric system performance. Without an independent and scientifically credible evaluation, it is very difficult for prospective customers to assess the relative merits of different biometric systems. This especially hinders the adoption of newer and more innovative systems, where there is no history of previous use and which cannot be tested using extant biometric databases which only exist for established technologies.
