An Approach To Communication Model Building

E. Reber Casstevens · Journal of Business Communication · 1979

Do we need a new communication model? This article suggests that youcan expand and refine any part of the basic sender-channel-receivermodel to increase its usefulness. A communications analyst may needto look at a part of the model, as through a magnifying glass, to examine that part in detail. To magnify all parts simultaneously wouldmake the model too cumbersome. Therefore, the author presents severaldesigns, each highlighting a particular aspect of the communication process. Environments, separate or shared, internal or external, may add toor subtract from a message. Feedback may be included or excluded. Allof these may be represented graphically, but not in a single model.
