A hybrid model for indexical use in natural language

JOHN MOULTON, Lawrence D. Roberts · Journal of Experimental & Theoretical Artificial Intelligence · 1992

We describe a system for modeling indexical reference. Because the system is based on a perceptual account of the determination of indexical reference, it uses a connectionist device for picking out the referent from simulated backgrounds. However, inputs from natural language to the system, and outputs about the reference of indexicals from the connectionist device, are processed by a sequential device, a semantic network based on conceptual graphs. After giving an overall outline of the project, we discuss some details and problems in the conceptual graph processing
