Text as a comprehension process: Toward a model of synergism

Text has been studied from two perspectives : as product (viz., Descriptive-Structural Approach) and as process (viz., Procedural Approach or Communicative Text Theory). Historical overviews are given by Rieser (1978) and de Beaugrande and Dressler (1981: ch. 2) for the former approach and by Henne (1975) and Braunroth et al. (1975) for the latter approach. In the first section of this article, I will survey the definitions of text (and texture or textuality) by principal scholars in the two camps. Then I will try to present models of text which partially integrate the two approaches. The main purpose of the models is to illustrate functional relations among the components of text which allow approximate estimation of the quantities of those components
