Data packet utilization in CCITT message handling systems

Summary form only given, as follows. Communications between users of different electronic mail systems are currently being established on a global basis. The standard vehicle for this communication is the CCITT Message handling systems protocols (X.400 Series). The communication among users in different mail domains is an important feature now being deployed. One of the main concerns is the performance in terms of resource utilization of the communication among users in different mail domains. One of the fundamental performance aspects of CCITT message handling systems is the number of data packets which is needed for transporting a given user message. This usage is computed by first estimating the message protocol data unit (MPDU) size on the basis of a given user message and then calculating the number of data packets on the basis of a previously obtained MPDU size. As an additional result, the optimal size for data synchronization between two consecutive minor synchronization points has been established.
