Combined Spectral and Temporal Segmentation of Speech
Carl M. Brandauer, Norman B. Reilly, Alvin M. Liberman · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1959
A series of perceptual experiments have been performed using real speech arbitrarily segmented in the frequency and time domains. Various combinations of temporal and spectral segmentation were used. Another variable investigated was the method of presenting the segmented speech to the listener. Some of the methods of presenting certain of the combinations of segmented speech yielded higher intelligibility scores than did other combinations with different methods of presentation. The relationship of these findings to simple band-width reduction schemes and auditory theory will be discussed.
