Vocal Tract Modelling

Janis Kamprod · Australian Journal of Human Communication Disorders · 1976

In this paper I shall consider the vocal tract as a complex resonator which continuously changes shape during speech. I shall introduce the mathematical description of this model, and show how it is used to extract data such as formants and pitch periods from the speech signal. Accurate automatic assessment and display of the formants in particular could lead to uses in therapy, providing a visual aid to speech correction.
