Free plate tuning and a range of different woods in 10 viola backs

Carleen Maley Hutchins · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1981

Ten 16-in. violas each with a different back wood—but with other features maintained as constant as possible—have been constructed according to our plate tuning theories based on the frequency relationships of modes ♯2 and ♯5 in each pair of top and back free plates before assembly. These mode frequency relationships will be discussed and the instruments demonstrated as far as time permits.
