Contrecoup …Nonlinearity and computer aided composition

Thomas DeLio · Interface · 1991

In this essay DeLio explores the notion of nonlinearity as it relates to computer aided composition. He discusses how the use of computers in the creative process seems to lead quite naturally to the creation of nonlinear sonic/temporal designs. The author analyzes one of his own recent chamber works, contrecoup... (1987), which was written with the aid of the computer. He identifies both the nonlinear aspects of this structure and the various ways in which the computer was used to generate that structure.
