Streaming media evolution

The notion of streaming media has been around for nearly two decades. From a research novelty to now consuming over half of all Internet bandwidth, streaming media is now much more commonplace. This keynote address will give my perspective on the history and evolution of streaming media and lessons learned. Since the introduction of digital video in the early 1990s, our community has spent significant effort focused on the development of scalable and adaptive mechanisms for streaming media. We have witnessed techniques ranging from interactive multimedia streaming, stored video streaming, peer-to-peer streaming, and remote tele-presence. Several common themes have emerged in these technologies and as we move forward as a community, this keynote will offer some thought and observations on applying lessons learned to future technologies and a handful of areas where streaming media can make significant impact beyond where we are today.
