Abstract In image coding, DCT is a standard technique adopted in JPEG. However, block distortion or blurring of details is often observed when this method is used. To resolve these problems, we propose a new two‐channel coding technique using a spline surface. This technique divides an image into two components: a low‐frequency component that is represented as a smooth spline surface and a high‐frequency component that is represented as the difference between the original image and the low‐frequency component. Experimental results show that the proposed method is more effective in compressing images than other methods, while maintaining high quality of the images. © 2001 Scripta Technica, Syst Comp Jpn, 32(6): 13–20, 2001
