Frequency and Time Sources-Past, Present, and Future

Landmarks in the history of frequency control and timekeeping are briefly described. Technologies involved in the latest classical and quantum mechanical standards are then considered, with a discussion of present capabilities. The paper concludes with projections of future areas of work.
