An efficient e‐mail protocol providing perfect forward secrecy for mobile devices

Chin‐Chen Chang, Chia‐Yin Lee, Yen‐Chang Chiu · International Journal of Communication Systems · 2010

Abstract With the explosive growth of Internet applications, e‐mail has become a popular medium for various types of data transmission. To ensure the confidentiality of an e‐mail, many secure e‐mail protocols have been proposed in recent years. In 2005, Sun et al. proposed an e‐mail protocol that claimed to have perfect forward secrecy. However, Dent pointed out some flaws of this protocol. According to Dent's comments, Kim et al. proposed two e‐mail protocols to overcome these weaknesses. In this article, we propose an efficient and secure e‐mail protocol that provides perfect forward secrecy. Our protocol is more suitable for mobile devices which have limited battery energy.
