A Comparison of User Preferences for Browser Password Managers

Mark Ciampa · Journal of Applied Security Research · 2013

Building upon a previous study, this analysis compared two different types of Web browser password managers: an extension with remote storage and a bookmarklet that generates in real time site-specific passwords. All participants completed a 4-step training process, hands-on use of these managers, and a survey of their experiences. The mean responses from the survey questions were analyzed using an independent (unpaired) t-test of samples with unequal sizes assuming equal variance. The results of this study seem to indicate that a bookmarklet that generates site-specific passwords may be more popular for users to implement over remote storage password managers.
