Effect of Sample Duration on the Articulation of Sounds in Normal and Clipped Speech

Rais Ahmend, Richard Fatehchand · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1959

Segments of vowels and consonants from nonsense syllables, accurately determined in position and width, are used for articulation measurements. The listening tests are performed on differentiated speech, and on differentiated speech subjected to severe clipping. Whether or not vowels are clipped, their segment lengths can be considerably reduced with little effect on articulation. This does not hold for consonants, with the exception of unclipped semivowels. The high articulation of interrupted speech is discussed, and some results are given.
