A Taxonomy of Software Development Environments and their Applicabilities to Supporting Evolutionary Information Systems Development

M. C. Er · Journal of Information and Optimization Sciences · 1990

In recent years, a number of sophisticated tools have been proposed and constructed for providing software developers with pleasant software development environments. The main aims are to improve software development processes and products: on the one hand, the programmer’s productivity can be improved; on the other hand, the software maintenance problem caused by the evolution of software can be alleviated. This paper presents a taxonomy of some software development environments found in recent literature. Key concepts are identified through the taxonomy. The applicabilities of these key concepts to supporting evolutionary information systems development are studied in detail. Finally, a possible incorporation and implementation of these key concepts in an evolutionary environment that supports information systems development are suggested. It is pointed out that the harmonious integration of the methodological tools provided by the evolutionary information systems development and the software tools provided by software development environments will make systems development environments possible.
