~tbstract.A flexible, large-scale programming system to facilit:tte the solution of information-processing problems and to provide intereommunicat.ionbetween programs and/or programmers lms been developed and realized on the IBM 709/7090 computer.The system is based on a master file eoncept and has provisions for aeeepting, storing, and retrieving both deseriptions and insttmees of large and complex data sets, as well as algorithms defined (m these data sets.Both data and algorithms may be expressed irt a family of command and descriptive languages.The eonccpt of distinct data descriptions and the content and use o:f such descriptions are discussed in some detail.
