The design of an OCR system for reading hand written numerals

William S. Rohland, Patrick J. Traglia, Patrick Joseph Hurley · 1968

The problem of transcribing computer input data from a human-sensible form to a machine-sensible form has grown with the computer industry. The "input gap" has also grown as the time to process a given batch of data in the CPU (central processing unit) has become smaller and smaller when compared to the time needed to manually transcribe that same batch of data. In short, today's data processing systems are capable of accepting, using, and disposing of data at much faster rates than available input devices are capable of providing, without some form of preliminary offline conversion or transcribing process.
