Electronic Music Box

Earl L. Kent · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1952

A new musical instrument is described and demonstrated. It demonstrates the versatility of electronic music by control of timbre, attack, release, loudness, legato, pitch, vibrato, and stereophonics. The instrument is keyed by a perforated roll of paper while all other variables are independently controlled by the operator. The instrument makes it possible for a composer or arranger to produce music without many of the conventional limitations of musical instruments and musicians. In other words, it is possible to produce music in the “Walt Disney” manner. The music box to be demonstrated is limited to a quartet of voices, but it will be accompanied by Mr. Charles Tennes at the console of a late model electronic organ.
