Abstract This is the first part of a survey of hierarchical clustering algorithms using joining methods: the Single‐Linkage algorithm. Complete‐Linkage and general algorithms defined by d(Ai, B) = = α,d(Ai, Ar)±αsd(Ai, As)±βd(Ar, As) will be discussed in two subsequent papers.
