Quintuple diagonal determinants related to a digital distribution problem

Kenneth B. Stolarsky · Linear and Multilinear Algebra · 1979

There is a very considerable literature on triple diagonal matrices, and even some exact formulae for their determinants. However, there does not seern to be much known about determinants of quintuple diagonal matrices. Here we provide a formula for a class of such determinants. One member of this classHk = Hk (e iθ), occurs in the study of base 2 expansions of multiples of a fixed odd integer k≥ 3. The formula is used to study the spectral radius of Hk (e iθ) as a function of θ.
