Interval-based representations of complex tones

Dewey T. Lawson · American Journal of Physics · 1980

A novel graphic representation is presented for complex musical spectra. Based on component intervals rather than the component tones themselves, this representation offers pedagogical and analytical advantages, particularly when musical transposition is involved. Examples are given of the use of this kind of plot in representing complex intervals and chords, discussing perceptual data, and carrying out various types of consonance analysis.
