Display Format and Decision Making in Television Processing of Chest Radiographs

Harold L. Kundel, George Révész, Francis J. Shea · Investigative Radiology · 1969

Different output display formats of a television image-processing system using contrast enhancement have been evaluated. A group of observers viewed a specially prepared set of chest radiographs on the monitors of the processor and their error rates were compared. Specifically, single-monitor displays consisting of an unprocessed television image and a contrast-enhanced television image were compared to a side-by-side display of both images. The results of using a dual display are better than those using either single display alone but not as good as those which can be achieved by double reading of the films. These results can be described in terms of an integration model derived from signal detection theory.
