Instrumentation problems in computer control systems

J L W Churchill · Journal of Scientific Instruments · 1965

The use of digital computers to control industrial plant and machinery introduces a number of new problems in instrumentation. All measurements needed by the computer must be made by instruments of the transmitting type and the signals they produce must be compatible with the computer input circuits. Many new measurements become necessary. The most important class of these is that concerned with product quality. Some difficult problems are posed by the need for a computer system to receive data on product quality, so that the necessary control action can be taken automatically. The type of measurement to be made varies enormously with the section of industry concerned, and some examples are given of present-day requirements.
