The near-uniform optical and infrared transparency of graphene is an intriguing and underexplored prospect for IR detection. On page 34, B. Özyilmaz and co-workers demonstrate the first investigation of the use of graphene as an IR-transparent electrode. The hexagonal graphene lattice is seen here lying above chains of polyvinylidene fluoride, the active sensing material. IR radiation is transmitted through the graphene, and absorbed directly by the sensing layer; a new paradigm in the detection of infrared radiation.
