Effect of Mutes on Cornet Tone Quality

Jody C. Hall, Clyde E. Lockwood · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1959

Tests reported at the Fifty-First Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America on the characteristics of cornet tones have been extended to include tones produced with various types of mutes. It is shown that the mutes modify or change the characteristics of the cornet sound. The muted sounds are found to have formant-like characteristics which are individual to the particular mute which is used. Tape recordings and a tone analyzer will be used in presenting the paper.
