IT security continues to be an area to which CIOs devote a considerable amount of strategy and resources. Today's threats to information technology are more sophisticated than ever before and there is every indication that the frequency of these threats will continue to increase, both from inside and outside of an organisation. Given the threats that organisations face, it is not surprising that many businesses and IT professionals are busy investing in the latest tools and security fads. But perhaps we need to step back and take a less reactive, approach. While privilege management has long been accepted as best practice, many companies have struggled with its implementation. However, while it can be difficult to implement on a per-user basis, it becomes a lots easier if we focus on applications instead, explains Brian Chappell of BeyondTrust Software.
